Broen Holman, a sophomore and the reigning CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division 4 boys cross country champion from Sonora High who earned all-state honors as a freshman last year, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss his return Nov. 26 to Woodward Park in Fresno for the California state championship meet. Holman earned eighth in his state debut last year, covering the 5-kilometer layout in 15:34.2. He is looking to become the first state champion from Sonora since Jason Hart captured the Division 3 crown in 1996. Holman improved his performance at Woodward Park to 15:17.1 in the championship race Oct. 8 at the 43rd ASICS Clovis Invitational. He revisits clocking 15:32.7 on the 5-kilometer layout at the Willow Hills course in Folsom at the Sac-Joaquin Section final to produce the top overall performance, regardless of division. Holman reflects on being sidelined as a result of illness for the majority of his freshman track season and how that impacted his summer training, resulting in a more conservative build this fall. He also examines the challenges of pushing himself more in workouts this season without the presence of former teammate Adin Dibble, who placed fourth as a senior in the Division 4 state final last year. Holman reflects on his 14:17.9 effort on the 3-mile course in the Doug Speck boys sweepstakes race Sept. 16 at the 41st Woodbridge Cross Country Classic at Great Park in Irvine and how that demonstrated what his potential could be during the postseason. He analyzes the opportunity to become the first sophomore to eclipse the 15-minute barrier at Woodward Park, looking to break the record of 15:01.0 achieved by Elias Gedyon of Loyola to win the 2008 Division 2 state title. Holman expresses gratitude for the support of his family, coaches and teammates throughout his career and how valuable the experience of competing at a national level starting at age 8 has helped him in preparation for postseason races. He speaks about the legacy of impressive distance runners at Sonora, and how he hopes to represent the program at the regional and national level in December competing at the CHAMPS Sports West championship race at Mt. SAC and the national final in San Diego.
